HISTORY How Mawabu began On 19 July 1962 a keen group of snow ski enthusiasts gathered together at Manly-Warringah Master Builders Club in Dee Why for the purpose of discussing the creation of a club to promote the sport of snow skiing and the building of a ski lodge at Perisher Valley. This ski club eventually became known as Mawabu Ski Club. In August 1962 the proposed site for the ski lodge was allocated to the Ski Club by the Kosciusko State Park Trust and in October of that year the Board of Directors approved the design of the original ski lodge. On 13 February 1963 Mawabu Ski Club (Manly-Warringah Master Builders Ski Club Limited) was incorporated with 50 foundation members. During February 1963 approval was obtained from the Kosciusko State Park Trust for the construction of the ski lodge. Building work commenced immediately and was completed in late April 1963 in time for the the June long weekend opening of the 1963 ski season. The original ski lodge was constructed through the voluntary efforts of its original members who were predominantly builders and members of Manly-Warringah Master Builders Club. Any member who was unable to contribute 100 hours of their time to the building project was required to pay one pound for each hour not worked by them, so that alternative labour could be employed. In 1979 the Ski Club undertook extensions to the living area and games room of the ski lodge which were completed in time for the 1980 ski season. Currently the Ski Club is undertaking renovations to the bedrooms and bathrooms of the lodge. Once completed, all bedrooms will have a large picture window, the choice of either 2 single beds or a king-size bed and a modern, fully tiled ensuite. These building works are scheduled to be completed in time for the commencement of the 2010 ski season. |
